Too Young to Learn Piano? YAY or NAY?

Too Young to Learn Piano? 🎵

I’ve got to get something BIG to get off my chest!

How many times have we heard teachers saying that a 3, 4, or 5-year-old is too young for piano lessons? Seriously, it’s like telling them they’re too young to color or learn their ABCs. I’m here to shout it loud and clear: NO WAY!

Preschoolers Can Learn, and They Want to Learn: Let’s debunk this myth once and for all. These little ones are at a crucial stage of learning. Their brains are like sponges, ready to soak in knowledge. They want to learn, and their parents want them to learn. So, why on earth would we say they’re too young?

Adjust and Adapt – It’s Easy! Now, I get it; teaching a 3-year-old is not the same as teaching a fifth-grader. We need to adjust our goals and adapt our teaching style. Get on the floor and play with them because, at this age, play is their language of learning.

Question: How do you teach a 3-year-old? Answer: Use music! They don’t know their letters? Teach them with music. Numbers? Music. Black and white keys? You got it – music! We are music teachers, after all. It’s about teaching music in a way that resonates with them.

Your Job is to Teach Music: Let’s stop with the excuses and curb the success of preschoolers. If you’re not the right teacher for them, it’s okay. Refer them to someone who specializes in it. But let’s not hold these kids back. They deserve the gift of music education.

Honesty Time: If you don’t want to teach literacy, that’s fine, but there are professionals who specialize in piano for preschoolers, and guess what? Their students thrive. I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and let me tell you, I’ve seen magic happen.
